Free/libre software is software with freedoms attached (Think free as in freedom). Free software allows free:

  • Use - there are no limitations on how, why, for what, or how long you use the software.
  • Study - you can examine and learn from the source code.
  • Modification - you can make any change you want to the software.
  • Distribution - you can distribute modified or unmodified versions of the software to anyone you want, and may charge to do so.

Unfortunately, the term Free Software is confused for "software available for no cost." This is not the case. Much non-free software is available for no cost, and some entities charge a fee for Free Software.
