It is important that our community financially support those who write free software. Free software is software that provides it users with essential freedoms; "free" does not refer to cost so there is no contradiction. Paying for free software guarantees that more and better free software is produced (as with any other good or service). It's true that volunteers make excellent contributions to free software. But if we want the fastest development possible, we should not shy from paying for the software we use and value. Besides producing more free software, this simply rewards free software developers and companies that do good work.

Ways to financially support free software include:

  1. Buying support.
  2. Paying for custom development
  3. Donations, either directly to developers, or to non-profits (such as the Free Software Foundation or the Xiph.Org Foundation) that pay for development
  4. Purchasing media
